RHP Hybrid Solid-State Relays
RHP Solid State Relays >5 Million Operations
Crouzet's patented RHP “Hybrid” solid-state relays combine all of the advantages of a solid-state relay and an electromechanical relay into one 17.5mm package! The result is a relay without a heat sink capable of 5 million operations when switching a 20 amp load. Put in perspective, the RHP's life expectancy is 50 times that of a typical electromechanical relay!

RHP Operating Principles;
Heat is the primary contributor to failures in a solid-state relay, while electrical arcing is the primary contributor to failures in electromechanical relays. The RHP is designed to use the advantages of each technology to offset the weakness in each technology. The output consists of one solid-state circuit in parallel with an electromechanical circuit. The solid-state output swtiches the load when the control signal is applied to the input. Once load-current is established, the electromechanical relay energizes, effectiviely bypassing the solid-state output for the duration of the duty-cycle. When the control signal is removed, the electromechanical relay de-energizes, allowing the solid-state output to “break” load current.

Since the solid-state relay is bypassed by the electromechanical relay during normal operation, there is little or no heat build-up inside the relay. This allows the device to operate without a heat sink. Moreover, since the electromechanical relay energizes without voltage across the output contacts (omitting the typical 1.6 volt drop across the solid-state output), there is no electrical arcing on the contacts. The combination provides the customer with an extremely reliable relay capable of switching 20 amp loads while only consuming 17.5mm of panel space!
