A solid state relay, in comparison to a mechanical relay, is actually not a relay at all. There are no moving components inside to switch power to and from the load. This is managed by the SCR, triac, alternistor, or other semiconductor device in the output of the SSR. And although the primary function of switching power to and from an electrical load is the same, several significant advantages are gained by using a solid state relay instead of EMR's.

Benefits of Solid State Relays;
 Long life; up-to 20x+ that of an EMR
 High surge-current ratings
 Quiet operation
 No arcing or welding of contacts
 High isolation voltage; typically >4Kv

However, there are also a few disadvantages to using solid state relays. Most notable is the heat dissipation, which is a characteristic of any semiconductor device (for more information, see the Knowledge Base section on solid state relays & thermal management. Also, solid state relays typically cost slightly more than equivalent electromechanical relays. However, given the life expectancy of solid state relays, they usually pay for themselves in a relatively short period of time.
